Nori Bake (Pasting Brush)
Nori Bake (Pasting Brush)
The soft bristles of the nori bake (pasting brush) are made from goat hair, are densely packed, and hold large amounts of paste for pasting and mounting backing sheets. At Mullowney Printing we use the nori bake for backing large etchings and woodcuts with a second and third layer of kozo.
It is important to soak the brush (in its entirety) in cool water for twenty or thirty minutes before every use. This keeps the bristles soft and prevents them from breaking. This also allows the hinoki (cypress) wood of the handle to swell and keeps the bristles from shedding. After use, wash the nori bake in warm water and hang to dry. Never dry the nori bake on a flat surface, which will cause warping.
