NEW RELEASE: Stephen Hayes

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce the publication of a new body of monotypes by Portland-based artist Stephen Hayes.

Created this past November in our Portland studio during Hayes’ Hallie Ford Fellows Residency. This third collaboration between Hayes and Mullowney Printing produced a body of variable landscape monotype prints based on locations in both Ukraine and Palestine.

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce the release of a much anticipated collection of relief prints by San Cristóbal, Chiapas based artist, Mazatl. For his first project with Mullowney Printing, Mazatl produced four multi-block relief prints titled Espíritu del
Sol I
 and Espíritu del Sol II. 

Mazatl is a contemporary artist whose relief prints, drawings, paintings, murals, and installations explore themes of unity, nature, introspection, healing, and liberation. He currently resides in Chiapas, Mexico. Mazatl is a member of Justseeds Artists' Cooperative and APC (Animal Power Crew).

We are pleased to welcome Stephen Hayes to Mullowney Printing for our final artist residency of 2024. Made possible by grant funding from the Ford Family Foundation, this is Hayes’ third time joining us at Mullowney Printing. We are looking forward collaborating with him over the few months! Learn more programs of our Undergrowth Print Fund (UEPF) - with the mission to support and nurture artists’ careers as printmakers and practicing studio artists.

A Democracy of Multiples features woodcuts, etchings, monotypes and letterpress broadsides published by Mullowney Printing over the past ten years, including work by Sandow Birk and Elyse Pignolet, Demian DinéYazhi', Stephen Hayes, Narsiso Martinez and Marie Watt.

An Opening Reception will be held on October 17th from 5-7 PM. Mullowney Printing Founder, Paul Mullowney, will make remarks at 4 PM.


Workshop: Private offerings

This fall and winter, Mullowney Printing is offering full or half-day private workshops to small groups for holiday celebrations, corporate events, networking, team building and more. We have openings for private printing sessions with Master Printer, and Mullowney Printing founder, Paul Mullowney this fall from October to December.

Mullowney Printing is located in a spacious northwest Portland studio, filled with natural light. We can guide you through all aspects of our printing project, including etching, monotypes, intaglio, woodblock, lithography, letterpress, screen printing and more.

EXHiBITION: Marie WatT, Telegraph

Watt’s ambitious exhibition is her second solo presentation with the gallery and her first to encompass the fully expanded space. Her newest works incorporate an extensive material vocabulary—including neon, welded steel, tin jingles, and textile—as part of a deeper meditation on what it means to communicate across languages, geographies, and generations.

Working in charcoal and mixed media on found cardboard produce boxes, Martinez draws from personal experience and relationships to highlight the lives and dreams of farmworkers. Martinez spent three weeks at Mullowney Printing, creating a new body of works, as part of the Federico Sevilla Sierra artist residency.

We are pleased to share two new large-scale linocut prints, the second release of works by Martinez developed during his three-week residency at Mullowney Printing in spring of 2024. These newly available works, Lady Injustice and Real Superhero, join two previously published prints titled Fearless Mode and Portrait of a Hero. During his time at Mullowney Printing, Narsiso Martinez explored his passion for traditional printmaking, honoring the long and rich tradition of resistance and revolution in graphic arts.

Workshop: INNOVATIVE INTAGLIO

Date: September 14-15, 2024 | Presenter: Jon Barcan

In this workshop, join local artist Jon Barcan to learn how to incorporate digital imagery into traditional copper intaglio etching processes. Students will learn how to expose text, illustration, and photography to silkscreens, and screen print water-based ink to the surface of their metal substrate. This ink layer will act as the plate’s acid resist during the completion of darkly etched aquatint tones.

NEW RELEASE: STORM THARP

July 2024

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce new editions by Storm Tharp. In his most recent collaboration with Mullowney Printing, during which Tharp completed a series of five delicately rich drypoint etchings printed on Japanese gampi. This discreet and elegant suite of five floral drypoints is printed in velvety black ink on diaphanous handmade gampi and reflects Storm’s love of Japanese craft and visual aesthetics. The resulting compositions are understated and elegant in their simple presentation, with very narrow margins, stamped quietly in red within the picture frame with the artist’s traditional hanko, or personal stamp.

NEW RELEASE: Narsiso Martinez

July 2024

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce new editions by Narsiso Martinez. During his three-week residency at Mullowney Printing, Narsiso Martinez explored his passion for traditional printmaking. He designed, carved, and completed two large scale linocut prints, scheduled to be published in late summer 2024, as well as a direct copperplate gravure etching and a variable edition monotype. Through his print work, Martinez honors the long and rich tradition of resistance and revolution in graphic arts, and pays homage to the print shops of his home state of Oaxaca. His work is a nod to the dynamic, decades-long impact of Chicano graphics in his adopted state of California.

We are proud to share that our dear friend Alison Saar’s official sculpture of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was inaugurated last week in Paris, France. Titled Salon, the artwork features 6 chairs positioned in a circle around a young black woman with the Olympic rings on the ground.

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce a new lithograph by Demian DinéYazhi’. Landing of the Homophobes (Pilgrims), was produced during DinéYazhi ́’s ongoing residency at Mullowney Printing. DinéYazhi’ has been in residence since early February 2024 as part of the Hallie Ford Fellowship Residency Program, funded through our Undergrowth Educational Print Fund.

Landing of the Homophobes (Pilgrims) is currently on view at Print Center New York from June 6 - July 13, 2024 as part of a partnership through the Publisher Spotlight program. Within this body of work, DinéYazhi’ reflects on the revolutionary history of print as a tool for activism, drawing parallels between movements of resistance both past and present.

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce a partnership with Print Center New York (PCNY). This summer, Mullowney Printing will be featured in Print Center New York’s Publisher Spotlight program. This partnership will feature work by Demian DinéYazhi'. The artist reflects on the revolutionary history of print as a tool for activism, drawing parallels between movements of resistance both past and present.

Portland, OR - Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce two new etchings by Felipe Baeza (b. 1987, Guanajuato, Mexico). Baeza fuses collage, painting, printmaking, and other techniques to create multilayered, textural works that explore notions of the body, immigrant, and queer experiences.

For his first project with Mullowney printing, Baeza collaborated with Harry Schneider, Master Printer Paul Mullowney and Alejandra Arias Sevilla. Together, they produced two elegant works on paper; Acoge al fantasma and Flesh and possibility. Both prints emerged during Baeza's 2023 Federico Sevilla Sierra Printmaking Residency.

Open Call: 2024/2025 Studio Apprenticeship PrograM

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce an open call for our 2024/2025 Studio Apprenticeship Program! The Apprenticeship Program is an exciting opportunity for emerging artists working in traditional print media to expand their skills in professional studio practices, technical printing proficiency and historical & contemporary knowledge by working in a fine art print publishing studio. This year, we will select two individuals for two studio apprenticeship positions.

SEVILLA SIERRA RESIDENCY: NARSISO MARTINEZ

April 2024

Please welcome Narsiso Martinez to Mullowney Printing to begin his two-week stay as our next Resident for the Federico Sevilla Sierra Printmaking Residency. Named in honor of Mexican printer Federico Sevilla Sierra, the program aims to preserve traditional printmaking practices by offering artists of Mexican heritage space and support to create work, while building connections between diverse communities in Portland and beyond. Former recipients include Felipe Baeza, Nuria Montiel, Arleene Correa Valencia, and Mazatl.

Key funding for the Federico Sevilla Sierra Printmaking Residency comes from the generosity of the Arias Sevilla Family Charitable Fund. Learn more.

These works emerged from Hutchin’s residency in Fall of 2023, alongside collaborating Master Printer Paul Mullowney and Printers Harry Schneider, Cassie Ferguson and Erin Moore. Hutchins joined us as part of the Hallie Ford Fellows Residency Program. We are deeply grateful to The Ford Family Foundation for providing the funding to make these works possible!

We are pleased to welcome Demian DinéYazhi to Mullowney Printing for our first artist residency of 2024. We are also elated to share that Demian’s work will be featured in this year’s Whitney Biennial. Even Better Than the Real Thing, co-organized by Meg Onli and Chrissie Iles, opens to the public on March 20, 2024. DinéYazhi is among 69 artists and two collectives represented in the 81st edition of the Biennial.


NEWS: Gather:Make:Shelter Partnership

March 2024

Mullowney Printing is excited to announce an ongoing partnership with Gather:Make:Shelter, a Portland organization creating opportunities for people experiencing houselessness and poverty by engaging in collaborative, skill-building projects in creative fields. Over the next several months, we will host workshops in our studio. Ten unhoused artists will work on self-directed print projects with the assistance of Master and Assistant Printers from Mullowney Printing and Gather:Make:Shelter staff.

The workshops will result in a portfolio of prints and a traveling exhibition to begin in the fall of 2024. Learn more about the partnership.

Dodge and Burn collapses together images and objects referencing American colonialist expansion in the Philippines during the early 1900s, as well as contemporary racial politics and historical amnesia.

EXHIBITION: Storywork THe prints of marie watt at print center New york

Print Center New York presents Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt, from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, the artist’s first traveling retrospective and the first to reflect on the role of printmaking in her ambitious interdisciplinary work. On view in the Jordan Schnitzer Gallery, the exhibition considers Watt’s printmaking both as a process and a philosophy—a medium that has had a nuanced and enduring impact on her career since 1996. Featuring over 50 works, it presents Watt’s etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts alongside a selection of her monumentally-scaled sculptures and textile works.

NEW RELEASE: OTIS KWAME KYE QUAICOE

Mullowney Printing is pleased to announce the release of a new etching by Portland-based artist Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, in partnership with the Portland Art Museum. This is Otis’s first etching, a self portrait in direct copper plate gravure, with chine collé and a screenprint overlay in an edition of 50, signed and numbered by the artist, on Somerset cotton rag. 100% of the proceeds from the sale go to support the Portland Art Museum’s Endowment for Black Art and Experiences as part of their Connection Campaign.

This conversation with Watt’s collaborating printers will illuminate Watt’s enduring engagement with print as a key element of her material, conceptual, and community practice.
